Reading Week Celebration: Message by Sindhu Teacher, Dept. of English.
Hello there...how's life? I can well imagine your groans while reading this question...lockdown days, online class hassles, no laughter with friends, no hangin' out with cousins, no movies, no restaurant dinners, no functions to attend....never in our wildest dreams did we expect that a break from our regular school life could be so miserable, right?

Reading Week Celebration: Message by Tiny Teacher, Dept. of English.
“Why don’t you stop gazing at the mobile phone and read something instead?” Parents are usually heard saying this to children these days. Very often a smart phone is seen as a device that blocks reading. It is under this presumption that the older generation scolds their children in this manner. But the truth might be that reading has increased with the advent of smart phones. It gives us easy access to all sorts of reading material always and everywhere. E books are available at the tip of our fingers. Hence it would be inappropriate to ask a child to keep aside the phone and read something. He might as well be reading something on the phone.
Nevertheless, we must see through the pitfalls that come with these gadgets. They offer more visual contents like videos and pictures than reading material. Visuals are certainly more appealing than any reading material even to adults, let alone children. It is quite natural that the visuals catch our attention than textual matter. Then why read at all? If we can get knowledge by watching something, then why insist on reading? This could be the question that follows. No. The answer is that the purpose of reading is not merely gaining knowledge.
When we read, we ignite our imagination. When we read something, we visualize what we read according to our imagination. For instance, when we read the words ‘a big mountain’ the size of the mountain is decided by the reader not the writer. It varies according to the imagination of different readers. On the other hand, when you are given a visual, there is no scope for a mental image beyond the given picture. That would mean that when reading ends imagination ends too. It is with our imagination that man has achieved such progress over the various stages of evolution. All our inventions and discoveries are the results of imagination. Hence it is very important to keep our imagination active. The habit of reading gives great nourishment to our imagination. Hence it would not be desirable to replace reading with anything else.
Reading day/week should not be seen as a day for reading, or a week for reading. Rather, it is a day that reminds us of the importance of reading. Once we realize the importance of reading it becomes part of our routine and we continue reading without being compelled by others. So, first we must realize the significance of reading and then consciously make efforts to keep reading as much as possible. Also, it is important to read what you like. There is nothing wrong in selective reading. Be it from books or from digital content, let our reading be in keeping with our tastes and interests. While reading we need not be conscious of the ultimate goals of reading. Just read… read for the sheer joy of it...

Poem by Anagha B Raj, HA2.
The Blue Wildflowers
Take your pick, choose what you love,
Gesturing to the garden, they ask.
Her face lifts and her gaze shifts
Features set in a cold mask.
The garden teems with flowers-
Of
every kind she ever did spy.
Her gaze aloof until she finds
The stone wall rising high.
Clambering up the stone wall is-
The loveliest flower she knew.
It was but just a wild vine,
Its flowers the prettiest blue.
Something of a smile graced her lips
Her eyes less steel than before,
As she pointed a dainty finger
At the wildflowers blooming galore
She's never had an answer
to their incredulous looks,
raised eyebrows or curl of lips,
Never did and never would.
For they wouldn't see the beauty
the flowers held in their resilience,
tendrils spread, grasping, clambering up
It was more than just insolence.
Wouldn't look past the prickly hairs
to marvel at the tender boldness
of the blossoms, small and bright blue
Amidst chaos, a sight to behold.
Never would they see the power, the pride
that comes with blooming, succeeding
With no tending, pampering or looking after-
You couldn't afford to be needy
They wouldn't see past the "nuisance"
To see the hope these beauties gave
To the young girl that she once was,
When all she heard was "Behave"
To see the surprise they gave her
For she never saw their fight
Only out of the blue, she'd find
They had bloomed, to her delight
To see the joy they gave to her
When the most broken of places
Were brightened up by the blossoms small
Yet no one to sing their praises
For they couldn't know how she wishes
For someone to see past the mask she wore,
To adore, like she did the wild flowers,
the chaos that formed her core

Reading Experience Shared by Anagha B Raj, HA2.
The next read is pure pleasure, slowly relishing the words, giggling at how the words foreshadow the end, discovering things missed out in the first read and rereading the favorite parts. A sly grin that could only come with knowing exactly what all this boils down to. It's more about the journey than the destination. A road trip, pausing along the way to take a picture here, collect a singular stone there, resting on the grass a while, just to watch the stars. There's no hurry, I know where I'm going and what's waiting for me there.
Then weeks and sometimes months later, when I take it up again it's like slipping into the warmth of an old worn out hoodie. The tranquility that only comes with familiarity. Like ambling back home through a well worn and well known path after a long time away, plucking a few daffodils from the roadside to weave into a crown for your brother, just like all those years ago. There's no worry, for you're home and safe.
-Isn't it amazing how a single book has multiple journeys to offer… ?
Reading Day Message by Our Principal
